An executive sponsor is a senior leader who serves as the visible champion for the organization’s integrated resiliency program, ensuring that business continuity, emergency management, and operational resilience efforts remain aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities.
Effective executive sponsors do more than endorse the program. They actively advocate for resiliency across the enterprise, helping reinforce the importance of healthcare preparedness and continuity among their leadership peers. Just as importantly, they help ensure the program has appropriate access to senior leadership teams and the Board of Directors, using data-driven key performance indicators (KPIs), maturity metrics, and operational insights to communicate progress, highlight risks, and demonstrate program value.
Executive sponsorship is also critical in driving organizational engagement in continuity planning. By reinforcing expectations for participation and accountability, executive champions help ensure that key stakeholders actively contribute to resiliency initiatives such as business impact analyses, continuity planning, and exercises. Their leadership helps remove barriers, encourage collaboration across departments, and maintain alignment between healthcare resiliency program efforts and organizational priorities.
Consistent encouragement from the executive sponsor, coupled with clear communication and measurable outcomes, helps embed resiliency into the organization’s governance structure and operational culture — forming the foundation of a mature, integrated resiliency program.
Sometimes it can also be valuable to hear from peers outside the organization. Watch and share this short video produced by Wakefield Brunswick and funded by the California Department of Health — and hear directly from healthcare executives on why leadership is the cornerstone of preparedness and continuity.
