Supporting Global Health Leadership | Cape Town, South Africa

We are proud to support Lori Wallman, Senior Advisor at Wakefield Brunswick, as she embarks on a meaningful educational experience.

Wallman will be traveling with a team to Cape Town, South Africa, for a course as part of her doctoral program at Tulane University's Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The course is designed to expose students to programs and approaches that support the health and well-being of highly vulnerable children and adolescents in low-resource settings, while providing firsthand insight into the challenges and realities of this work.

South Africa has a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the largest population of children living with HIV in the world. This learning experience will examine current and past interventions aimed at improving health care for orphans and vulnerable children living with HIV in South Africa.  The course is taught by Dr. Tonya Thurman and draws on Tulane’s decades of research and evaluation work conducted through the Highly Vulnerable Children’s Research Center (HVC-RC). Since 2010, the HVC-RC has collaborated with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Southern Africa to identify and support best practices for families and children affected by HIV.
